Looking for a more Elegant Look? Half Round Gutters vs. K-style Gutters

There are different types of gutters found in residential installations today, but the most
sought-after styles are the k-style and half round gutters. Gutters are essential in moving rain
and external moisture away from your home to prevent leaking and flooding your home’s interior. So,
besides looking at the colors, materials, and prices, it is also important to consider the style in
order to choose the right gutters for your home.

Gutters are named from the appearance of their profile when viewed from the side, so K-style
gutters have an outer shape that vaguely resembles the letter K. This style’s outer edge comprises
a short, straight-line from the gutter’s bottom with two opposing curves followed by another
straight line. There are sizes and materials of K-style gutters, with the most common sizes being
five and six-inch. Common materials include aluminum, copper, galvanized steel, and vinyl.

The basics of Half Round Gutters
While k-style is the default gutter style for most US homeowners, because of its ease of
installation and minimal labor costs, some homeowners prefer to install something more stylish and
appealing that is customized to suit their homes. Half-round gutters are a great alternative to the
standard k-style gutters. Some of their characteristics include:

1. Shape

Unlike their square-shaped counterparts, these gutters are rounded like a round pipe that has been
cut laterally. The edges of these gutters have a curled top, though the curl may be present on only
one of the sides. They were widely available in a variety of widths and colors, and could be
purchased in sections, or installed as seamless gutters.

2. Materials

Historically, half-round gutters were preferred in most homes because they were easy to form using
basic tools, like by bending steel plates around cylinders. Today, however, these gutters are
manufactured in a host of materials, including copper, aluminum, and zinc-coated and galvanized
metal.

3. Style

The popularity of the k-style gutter is mostly due to its resemblance to interior crown molding,
which allowed it to complement most modern homes. That said, half-round gutters can add a touch of
elegance to the exterior of homes built in the early-to-mid 20th century. These gutters are also
suited for certain styles of architecture that are characterized by rounded roof-lines.

Homeowners stand to benefit in a variety of ways from choosing half-round gutters for their homes,
including:

1. Elegance: they provide the perfect highlight for older homes

2. Less prone to corrosion: they feature a smoother shape compared to the angular formed k-style
gutters, which reduces the areas where wetness can form, making them less likely to corrode.

3. Easy maintenance: they are easier to keep clean because waterborne debris flow freely through
the gutters without being caught on the rough edges, making the gutter less likely to clog. This
ultimately reduces the cleaning frequency.
These gutters are more expensive compared to other styles. However, they are not as readily
available, and require specialty accessories, like hanger brackets and threaded rods to install. So, if you are
convinced that you want to install half round gutters, it is important that you find a skilled
contractor, who has dealt with this kind of gutter installation before, to avoid inconveniences.

Steel Gutters MN

February 20, 2015 Randy 1111111111111 Comment

What Are Steel Gutters? What Are the Benefits of Installing Them?

Stainless steel gutters are superior to their vinyl and aluminum counterparts. Of course, they are
more expensive than their cousins as well. However, making the financial commitment to install
steel will save you in the long run as these gutters will be able to endure practically anything
nature throws at them.

Steel gutters are typically constructed from painted steel or galvanized steel. The individual
pieces are either riveted together or soldered. A variety of attachment mechanisms can be used to
secure them to the building including: exterior brackets, hidden brackets or strap hangers.

Benefits of Steel Gutters

Besides their overall durability and strength, steel gutters are better equipped to resist weather
damage. Oftentimes, our gutters get pretty beat up due to snow storms, ice buildup, falling tree
branches and hail storms. After a severe wind storm, it is common to see puncture marks and excess
water leaking from traditional gutter materials.

Thankfully, this is uncommon with steel. Extra ladder support is another benefit during your
biannual cleaning routine. Perhaps you need to clean even more often if you reside under a
deciduous tree or have a copious amount of pine needles to contend with.

If you accidentally slip and step into a steel gutter while you are up on your roof, you will fare
better than if your work boot crunched into another material such as vinyl or aluminum. The
strength component is what makes these gutters stand out from the competition.

How Do Steel Gutters Compare To the Rest?

Believe it or not, original gutters were initially constructed out of wood! After the invention of
machines that could flatten and roll out and shape metal, other gutter products emerged on the
market. The most commonly used today include aluminum and vinyl designs. Copper gutters are rare
like steel and extremely strong as well.

Many people choose less expensive materials at first; however, after years of gutter replacement
and repairs (not to mention expensive water damage that can occur to your home if water leaks
behind the gutter and penetrates your foundation or exterior walls) many people are deciding to
increase their gutter budget and choose a product such as steel with a longer lifespan.

The Rust Dilemma
One of the main issues with steel gutters is their potential to eventually rust. Regardless if you
chose a painted material or decided on a shiny galvanized version, steel gutters are prone to rust.
If you want to ensure as little maintenance as possible in the future, consider choosing steel
gutters that have been coated with an aluminum-zinc layer. This process will offer you the strength
of steel that you desire, along with more corrosion resistance.

Temperature Fluctuation

There is the regular expansion and contraction issue to contend with steel gutters, as with any
metal during periods of heat and cold. A fifty foot length of steel will contract or expand
approximately one quarter of an inch with a temperature change of 50 degrees. Just for comparison
sake, aluminum gutters change at roughly twice that rate.

Routine Cleaning and Inspection

Regardless of what gutter material you choose, you will still have to clean and inspect your rain
gutters. Steel gutters are the strongest; however, they still need to remain free of debris in
order to function at their optimum level.

Copper Gutter Hangers

February 10, 2015 Randy 1111111111111 Comment

Types of Copper Gutter Hangers
Rain gutters are attached to the house in several ways, either with brackets, hangers or straps.
Hangers grab the front lip of the gutter and snap to the back, flush against the gutter. They are
secured to the house with screws or nails. Hangers give the gutter support and strength. The type
of gutter hanger and the spacing between two of these will determine how long a gutter system
lasts.

Copper gutter hangers are some of the strongest and most durable to be used with copper gutter
systems, though many gutter hangers are designed for the popular aluminum K-style gutters. There
are several styles of hangers, and the hidden hanger method is most commonly used today. Modern
hidden hangers cannot be seen from the ground and they offer an important benefit over traditional
spike and ferrule hangers. Over the years the wood of the support surface gets old and the spikes
of a spike and ferrule hanger tends to pull and homes without a fascia are forced to use a strap
that is hard to get under the shingles. It is therefore highly recommended to wait and change the
gutter system to a sturdy, hidden fascia mounted system with roof remodeling in old homes.

Types of Gutter Hangers

1. Fascia Mount Hanger
Fascia mount hangers in general are used in homes where there are fascia boards installed over the
gutter rails. There are several styles of fascia mount hangers:

· Spike and ferrule: There are two parts to the Spike and Ferrule system. The ferrule or tube is
inserted in the gutter, keeping the gutter width uniform and strong. The spike is inserted through
the gutter, the ferrule and out the back into the rafter and the fascia, if there is one.

· Hidden hanger: Most hidden hangers are clipped to the gutter lip, pass around the gutter and is
screwed or nailed to the fascia board through the gutter’s back. Since the hanger is inside the
gutter, it is hidden. In case the fascia board is slanted, it will be necessary to use a gutter
wedge. The hidden hanger system makes it easy to remove the gutter, if it is ever required to be
removed.

· Free floating: This type of gutter hanger uses a mounting bracket attached to the fascia board
and the gutter is then fitted into the bracket. This type of gutter hanger is usually used when
expansion and contraction is an issue, or in vinyl gutters.
2. Roof Mount Hanger

Roof mount hangers are used in houses without fascia boards or in houses where the fascia boards
are not vertical or set too far back to allow gutter hangers to be fastened to them. The T-bar suspension
system is one type of roof-mount hanger, which hangs from the sub-roof. It is also used when the
shingle or tile projection extends beyond the usable gutter width.

Gutter hangers should be chosen to match the material of the gutter to prevent electrolytic
corrosion. Proper installation is also essential for the longevity of the system. For instance, for
most fascia installations, there should be a hanger installed every 24 inches. It is also important
to work with a seller that offers all styles of copper gutter hangers to suit various gutter
styles, for your convenience.
